So i logged into the internet today as I do ritually everyday. And there is often a lot of nonsense on the internet, spoken by many, which makes little sense. However this is normally a minority. A casing point was seeing a BNP party political broadcast on youtube and seeing a good handful of people defending Nick Griffin and his party, fucking idiots.
But today was rather different. It must have been the Grammys last night, I don't usually bother with all the award shows for music or even film (except for the Mercury Music Prize, and maybe the NME Awards) but this time it was rather brought to my attention, forcefully.
In looking through Tumblr I found an awful lot of people complaining heavily about the award of the Album of the Year. Now I don't know who was nominated other than Katy Perry, im assuming, as i was made aware of it through a KP tumblr i think. For the first time the award went to a band who are not signed to a major record label. Surely this is a good thing for music? no? It was won by The Arcade Fire's album The Suburbs. Which for me is a sensational album. And what they did for their single The Wilderness Downtown was phenomenal, never seen anything like it. Check out the link here, i think it only works if you're using Chrome - [link] (it opens a few new windows, ignore them and just enjoy) but that is the best thing iv seen in a long time.
As great as my love for The Arcade Fire is (not just this album, but the 2 preceding this too) it seems that a lot of people haven't heard of them. And so in their eyes, they didnt deserve the award. Ridiculous. Have they even listened to the album, im guessing not. What annoyed me is that not one of the comments made a decent argument with any validity. Just nonsensical garbage. I'm beginning to wonder if people listen to albums as albums anymore. Or just listen to and download individual tracks. One of the comments said something along the lines of
"They didn't have as many top 10 singles as Gaga's album"
I'm sorry but that isn't what makes an album. Gaga's 'album' -to me at least- is simply a collection of singles, which is great if you're looking to sell copies and singles. But really? Has the art and appreciation of a good album been lost? An album is fully intended to be listened to from start to finish in chronological order. During its listening you follow the journey that it takes you upon. The great albums of the past were fantastic pieces of art to listen to, and maybe you would get one or two singles from. This has certainly changed in the mainstream pop market. Which is a great shame, however its refreshing to see a great album in 'The Suburbs' getting the recognition it deserves. And its good to see 'The Album of the Year' award going to an 'actual' album.
Maybe not everyone will agree with this, and think that the most commercially successful album deserves this award. But does commercial success necessarily mean a 'successful album'?
I dont know what you guys think but im rather glad it went to The Arcade Fire and not the likes of Katy Perry or Gaga. And do you still listen to albums in full? Any comments on this whole issue would be awesome, i'd love to hear your thoughts.
And maybe, what are your favourite albums of all time? and dare i ask, why?
A little belated here, but I agree with you about how albums should be listened to as albums.
Arcade Fire probably deserved it more than anyone, even if I haven't heard the album. I've heard wonderful things about them, and so it's just a matter of society's ingorance.
dA works in Internet Explorer, by the way, so I have to divert from Firefox to be able to check my messages.
Chrome?! Chrome is where its at. but glad you got it sorted, or partially resolved at least. And yes, thoroughly deserved by Arcade Fire
It's the NME Awards next week that I'm really looking forward to though, almost every nomination is excellent, unlike the more mainstream pop of the grammys and brits that have just been oh im excited. and Dave Grohl to receive the God Like Genuis Award. oh yes!
Everybody has a different taste in music and listens to different artists, so not everyone will have the same opinion about who is 'the best'. Also, more people know popular and mainstream music, because it's on tv and radio all the time. And because that kinda music is more well-known, it's easier to pick as a winner. I don't say it's the right thing to do, but what choice do they have? How can you judge art? There is no scale that defines the quality of music, at least not what I know of. Award shows are just stupid. I just listen to the music I like, and you listen to yours. Despite what it may look like sometimes, there's still real music being made out there.
Oh and yes, I listen to albums as a whole mostly. Sometimes I just shuffle to keep things fresh. Can't pick a favorite though, there are too many goodies! D: I also have last.fm btw: [link]
What I find ridiculous is that people were complaining that Justin Beiber didn't win for best new artist. Personally I think that his songs shouldn't even be considered as music. I'll admit, I've never even heard of the artist that did win. But I could tell that she was much more talented and I was glad that somebody who wasn't mainstream won for once. Though I really wanted Mumford and Sons to win
yes i heard that some other unknown artist won that too, but im sure her music is better than that of Bieber's. And i love Mumford and Sons too, i'd have been more than happy to see them win
Oh dear, I've just read some of the comments on the page you were talking about. It's awful just because those people only listen to mainstream music, which in my opinion pretty much all sounds the same, it doesn't mean that other bands aren't good!
exactly, i dont like it when people think that only the music they they listen to is any good. and by default, anything that they dont like is therefore rubbish.
i might get some hate for this, but i really like the new linkin park album, a thousand suns. preferably the full experience, where it plays all the songs as one track. i don't have a favorite album really. just some i really like.
